Day 19: Pre-Show Rituals
Recently, someone asked me if I have any pre-show rituals. I’ve always loved the idea of rituals (and even have a fondness for weird superstitions). I was always fascinated when I would hear of rockstars and athletes who have particular procedures before stepping onto the stage or field.
For some people it’s something as simple as a prayer circle before a show, for others it’s lucky underwear or eating exactly 14 skittles. I don’t know why performers or athletes are often times so committed to these rituals but both creativity and the need for extreme focus can be mentally grueling, so I’m guessing this provides peace of mind in some aspect. Maybe it’s bizarre to some but I find it no different from people who have a morning routine before work.
After doing standup comedy nearly 7 years, I’ve realized I have some rituals, too. I don’t think mine are very out there but here they are:
- Brush my teeth
I cannot leave the house without brushing my teeth before any event, standup or not. It just makes me feel refreshed and like it’s a little reset button. A shower is a luxury if I have time.
2. Bring a jacket (and a pen) just in case
I always have a pen and notebook on me. Always. You would think it’s because it’s a logical thing for a comic to carry but I actually carry them with…
